This is my entry for the SCBWI Tomie DePaola illustration contest. I used notebook paper, a coffee stirrer stick, fabric, and scraps of watercolor paper for this illustration of the poem "Sneeze." Just goes to show you don't need fancy, expensive materials to make art.

The theme is "underwater" at
I used inks, paints and tissue paper in this sea turtle painting.   Rubbing alcohol was dropped in areas of wet paint to create the background effects.
The texture on the sea turtle was created with bubble wrap that was painted and printed on the tissue paper.

"Together" is the theme for this week at  You can see this piece and other artists' interpretations of this theme on their website.

I'm still working on these little characters.  Reworked one of the scenes by tightening the composition and making the characters a little more cartoon-like and quirky.
This is a sketch for another piece I want to do.  I played around with the birds-eye view which I think helps tell the story better.

This week's theme on is "hidden."  I'm still playing around with these little characters for a children's story I've written.  This time I worked in colored pencil and I think I like the direction it's going much better.  Next, I'll add  the girl's bedroom in the background.  And it needs a cat -- a very nervous cat behind the girl.

To the Resuce

Here's an illustration I added for this week's theme "rescue" on www.illustrationfriday.  The actual "rescue" takes place in the second illustration posted here.  Big sister is not too happy that story time was interrupted for a diaper change

The theme for Illustration Friday is Fresh.  I enjoy painting avocados because I get to eat them once I'm finished.  Yum.

The theme for Illustration Friday is hybrid.  This is part of a larger illustration that I'm working on.  This started as a watercolor then I added some textures and did some tweaking in Photoshop.

Portrait Painting

I had a chance to go to portrait painting group today where the model was dressed as a gypsy.  I painted this in oils on a  9 x 12 canvas.

The topic for this week on is "Tension."

So what do you do with all those left over circles from your 3-hole punch.  Make sheep of course...and one sneaky wolf in sheep's clothing.

Woodlands Waterway Collage/Painting

This is a larger collage/mixed media piece (18" x 18") that I completed from the smaller study of the Woodlands Waterway.  I used paper sacks, newspapers, and tissue paper to create the collage, then painted over areas letting some of the materials show through.  It's so much fun to create this way, but by the time I'm finished, there are bits of papers all over my studio floor.  Time to clean up!

This painting, along with other artists' paintings, will be displayed at the Hubbell and Hudson Market near the Woodlands Waterway in August.
